आज उत्तराखण्ड के गाँधी इन्द्रमणी बड़ोनी जी की जयन्ती है। 2 अगस्त 1994 को बड़ोनी जी पौड़ी प्रेक्षागृह के सामने अनशन पर बैठे थे। उसकी मांग थी पृथक उत्तराखण्ड राज्य की स्थापना। 7 अगस्त के दिन उन्हें जबरदस्ती उठाकर मेरठ के एक अस्पताल में भर्ती करा दिया गया और बाद में दिल्ली के एम्स में भर्ती किया गया। 70 वर्ष के इस बूढ़े व्यक्ति ने 30 दिनों तक अनशन किया और तीसवें दिन जनता के दबाव के कारण अपना अनशन वापस ले लिया। यहीं से उत्तराखण्ड के ऐतिहासिक आंदोलन की शुरुआत हुई।
उह समय बीबीसी ने उत्तराखंड आन्दोलन पर अपनी एक रिपोर्ट छापी जिसमें उसने लिखा- “अगर आपने जीवित और चलते-फिरते गांधी को देखना है तो आप उत्तराखंड चले जायें। वहां गांधी आज भी विराट जनांदोलनों का नेतृत्व कर रहा है।” आजादी के बाद गांधीजी की शिष्या मीरा बेन 1953 में टिहरी की यात्रा पर गयी थी। जब वह अखोड़ी गाँव पहुंची तो उन्होंने गाँव के विकास के लिये गांव के किसी शिक्षित व्यक्ति से बात करनी चाही। अखोड़ी गांव में बडोनी ही एकमात्र शिक्षित व्यक्ति थे। मीरा बेन की प्रेरणा से ही बडोनी सामाजिक कार्यों में जुट गए।
24 दिसम्बर 1924 को टिहरी के ओखड़ी गांव में जन्मे बडोनी मूलतः एक संस्कृति कर्मी थे। 1956 की गणतंत्र दिवस परेड को कौन भूल सकता है। 1956 में राजपथ पर गणतंत्र दिवस के मौके पर इन्द्रमणि बडोनी ने हिंदाव के लोक कलाकार शिवजनी ढुंग, गिराज ढुंग के नेतृत्व में केदार नृत्य का ऐसा समा बंधा की तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री जवाहर लाल नेहरु भी उनके साथ थिरक उठे थे। बडोनी जी ने वीर भड़ माधोसिंह भण्डारी पर नाटक लिखा और इसका निर्देशन करते हुए पूरे देश में इस नाटक के हजार के लगभग शो किए। इससे बड़ी जी को बहुत प्रसिद्धि मिली।
बडोनी जी की प्रारंभिक शिक्षा गांव में ही हुई। माध्यमिक और उच्च शिक्षा के लिए वह नैनीताल और देहरादून रहे। इसके बाद नौकरी के लिए बंबई चले गये जहाँ से वह स्वास्थ्य कारणों से वापस अपने गांव लौट आये। उनका विवाह 19 साल की उम्र में सुरजी देवी से हुआ था।
1961 में वे अपने गाँव के प्रधान बने। इसके बाद जखोली विकास खंड के प्रमुख बने। बाद में उन्होंने उत्तर प्रदेश विधान सभा में तीन बार देव प्रयाग विधानसाभ सीट से जीतकर प्रतिनिधित्व किया। 1977 का चुनाव उन्होंने निर्दलीय लड़ा और जीता भी। 1980 में उन्होंने उत्तराखंड क्रांति दल का हाथ थामा और जीवन भर दल का नेतृत्व व मार्गदर्शन करते रहे। उत्तर प्रदेश में बनारसी दास गुप्त के मुख्यमंत्रित्व काल में वे पर्वतीय विकास परिषद के उपाध्यक्ष रहे। बडोनी ने 1989 का लोकसभा चुनाव भी लड़ा किन्तु बहुत कम मतों से चुनाव हार गए। कहते हैं कि पर्चा भरते समय बडोनी की जेब में मात्र एक रुपया था जबकि उनके प्रतिद्वंद्वी ब्रह्मदत्त ने उस चुनाव में करोड़ों रुपया खर्च किये।
1988 में उत्तराखंड क्रांतिदल के बैनर तले बडोनी ने 105 दिन की पदयात्रा की। यह पदपात्रा पिथौरागढ़ के तवाघाट से देहरादून तक चली। उन्होंने गांव के घर-घर जाकर लोगों को अलग राज्य के फायदे बताये। 1992 में उन्होंने बागेश्वर में मकर संक्रांति के दिन उत्तराखंड की राजधानी गैरसैण घोषित कर दी। शिक्षा क्षेत्र में काम करते हुये उन्होंने गढ़वाल में कई स्कूल खोले। 18 अगस्त, 1999 को ऋषिकेश के विट्ठल आश्रम में उनका निधन हो गया। वाशिंगटन पोस्ट ने इन्द्रमणि बडोनी को ‘पहाड़ का गांधी’ कहा है। उत्तराखण्ड के गाँधी को उनकी जयन्ती पर याद करते हुए कोटि-कोटि नमन एवं विनम्र श्रद्धांजलि।
